A recent study indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals purchasing these treatments need to be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the treatment is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a return to original weight within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Approaches
The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the injections explains the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have stopped the jabs describe a sudden return of cravings.
"It was like a trigger flipping and you're instantly starving," said an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Use is higher among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing lifestyle management.
